Lots of people think that accounting is quite boring, not an adventure at all. Numbers, ledgers and perhaps the green visor. Then a pencil. Tallying, summing up. One can feel the yawn growing in one’s throat.

There is even a Monty Python skit called “The Boring Life of an Accountant” which is very funny and I encourage you to find that classic bit of Python humor.

But then the boredom ends. Forensic accounting is an adventure. I always say its the discipline of finding all of the bad people and protecting the good people from them and bringing the bad people to justice.

Madoff’s ponzi scheme is – I’m sure at this moment- being de engineered by forensic accountants to locate and recover the monies lost. Forensic accountants hunt down and find laundered money, criminal conduct, and essentially they are the Men in Black of the financial world.

I remember a Boston Legal episode where James Spader told a cheating husband who was trying to divorce his wife and leave her with nothing “then we’ll put all of this under the scrutiny of Forensic Accountants which you will pay for and we will hire..” Now that was a scary thought.

A dear friend of mine’s son had an offer to get his MBA paid for if he took up accounting. He thought “aww, how boring” until I showed him what a Forensic accountant is. Now he’s becoming one.

Boring indeed.
