Tom Golden discusses his first fraud discovered as an auditor which led him to begin his Forensic Accounting practice.

I am really torn. I love tax classes, which allow hands-on learning, and I am bored with audit classes as these tend to be more lecture-based. The Big 4 seem to prefer that students have the tax knowledge, which is lucky for me, but for the real world, what career route should I take? The companies are asking those difficult questions now. Do I have more flexibility to learn and advance with audit, or is tax the better career route? Again, I am not looking for educational advice as I am pretty settled with tax classes. I am really trying to decide what professional track will allow me the most flexibility for advancement. Eventually, I think I want to become a forensic accountant, if that helps. Thank you.
In terms of an educational track, the Big 4 prefers that students take the tax track. Auditing can be taught more on the job than tax. However, I want to know what route is better in terms of a career – tax or audit. Long-term, a few years down the road, I want to work as a forensic accountant, but for now I want the flexibility to move to different divisions, (i.e., business risk, forensic accounting, etc.), work internationally, and so on. When I interview with accounting firms, what route do I tell them I want to take to satisfy these requirements? Again, I already know that I am taking the tax route in terms of education. I am merely confused about whether I should choose tax or audit to help me gain the education (on-the-job training) that will allow me to be the best accountant for the firm I work for, have the flexibility to move from division to division over a number of years, etc.

Brad Sargent helped develop ACFEI’s Certified Forensic Accountant course, and is a former instructor. Here, he gives his testimonial about ACFEI.

This is something I’m interested in, but am not sure how to go about it. What should my major be? Most schools don’t have a forensic accounting degree, so would a regular accounting degree be a good place to start? Any info you have would be appreciated.
Thanks for the info, sothere!. I’m 21 and already have a few years of college done, but I’m going to change my major. I started out as an education major becuase that’s what everyone said I should do. But I hated it….much more interested in business.
