What can I do with an Associate’s Degree in Accounting?

I have been fortunate to have landed the first job I applied for at an advertising agency right out of high school. I started out in computer graphics and was a part of the art department. When I was finished with a task and had some free time I would help anyone who needed help.

I found myself constantly helping out the accounting department. When someone quit they gave me less graphic projects and started training me to temporarily replace the person who quit.

For the past year I have been working in the Accounting department as the Accounts Payable specialist, and have recently been promoted to being the Accountant’s personal assistant. With that promotion came some training in Forensic Accounting and now I juggle a lot of different accounting responsibilities. I have never had any education in accounting other than my on the job training in a very short amount of time. Even though I am not confidant being in charge, the Accountant is extremely comfortable leaving me in charge as the Accountant when she takes vacations etc.

I told her about 2 months that I would only be there until July 2009 and then going to our community college in August to get an associate’s in something other than accounting. Well, she came to me today and said that if I decided to enroll in the Associate’s in Accounting degree program she would have the agency pay my tuition in full.

Although I have dreams of a different career the offer is tempting, my seniority is tempting, my current pay is large for the short time I have been there so the thought of increased pay and increased promotions is very tempting. I also seem to pick it up fairly quickly and I am good at what I do.

My main concern is that I will be in the same place that I am right now regardless of my educational status. I know I would be more knowledgeable and understand Accounting language a lot easier and more quickly, but is getting an Associate’s degree in Accounting going to be worth all of the time and effort? [not to mention stress]
